Robert Miles Junior School

Physical Education

At Robert Miles Junior School, our vision for Physical Education (PE) is to provide a comprehensive and enriching program that meets the requirements of the National Curriculum while nurturing the physical, social, emotional and academic wellbeing of our children. Through our PE curriculum, we aim to develop physical literacy, promote lifelong participation in physical activity, foster social and emotional development, support academic achievement, promote health and wellbeing and ensure accessibility for all children.

Our PE curriculum is designed to deliver three key elements: knowledge and understanding (the what and the how), the big ideas of PE (main concepts including teamwork, cooperation, skill development, analysis and evaluation) and the strands of PE which cover all eight disciplines that are taught and developed across the school.  We build on the basic movement and simple games learnt at KS1, developing knowledge, understanding and skills in gymnastics, dance, swimming, net and wall games, outdoor adventurous activity, athletics, striking and fielding and invasion games across the school.

1. Meeting the Requirements of the National Curriculum We are committed to delivering a PE curriculum that aligns with the requirements of the National Curriculum. Our program is designed to cover a broad and progressive range of activities, skills, and knowledge, providing our children with a solid foundation in Physical Education. Our PE curriculum develops pupils’ competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities, pupils who are physically active for sustained periods of time, pupils are engaged in competitive sport and activities, and children who lead healthy, active lives.

2. Developing Physical Literacy We recognise the importance of developing physical literacy in our children. Our curriculum focuses on building fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, and striking. In addition, we provide opportunities for children to learn more advanced skills that are specific to particular sports and activities, fostering their overall physical competence. As a school, we commit to ensuring all pupils access two hours of quality and progressive PE lessons a week by using the ‘Get Set 4 PE’ scheme.

3. Promoting Lifelong Participation in Physical Activity We believe in instilling a positive attitude towards physical activity and encouraging lifelong participation. Our PE program offers a diverse range of activities that are fun, challenging, and rewarding, catering to the interests and abilities of all children. By providing a variety of engaging experiences, we aim to inspire a lifelong passion for physical activity in our children.

4. Fostering Social and Emotional Development We regard Physical Education as playing a crucial role in fostering social and emotional development. Through collaborative activities and team sports, our children learn important life skills such as teamwork, communication, leadership, and resilience. We create a supportive and inclusive environment where children can build positive relationships, develop self-confidence, and learn to overcome challenges not only in PE, but also other curriculum areas.

5. Supporting Academic Achievement Research has shown that physical activity has a positive impact on cognitive function, attention, and academic performance. By incorporating movement and physical activity into our curriculum, we aim to support the academic success of our children, promoting a holistic approach to education. By engaging in regular physical exercise, children can enhance their focus, concentration, and overall well-being, leading to improved academic success.

6. Promoting Health and Wellbeing We are committed to promoting the health and well-being of our children through Physical Education. Our curriculum not only emphasises the importance of physical activity but also educates children about healthy lifestyle choices. We aim to empower our children with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about their health, promoting physical, mental, and emotional well-being.  We have a whole school annual Healthy Lifestyles Week where this is encouraged.

7. Accessibility We firmly believe that every child should have the opportunity to access the PE curriculum. We strive to create an inclusive environment that accommodates the diverse needs and abilities of all children. Our teaching approaches are adaptable and inclusive, ensuring that every child can actively participate and benefit from the PE program at Key Stage 2 and be ready for KS3 by the end of Year 6.

In July 2024, the school was, once again, awarded the 'Gold' School Games Mark Award.
