Mount Cook 2023
Year 5 are having a brilliant time at Mount Cook Adventure Centre in Derbyshire. The weather has been great, the activities exciting and the children are loving it! They are also fantastic ambassadors for our school. Here are some photos from the first two days:
History Brought to Life
Year 6 found their topic on World War 1 last term fascinating and it inspired lots of great writing and art work. As the topic comes to an end what better way to consolidate all their learning by immersing the children in genuine historical artefacts from the period? The children were fortunate to spend a day with Jason King and his WW1 collection – http://www.worldwarartefacts.co.uk/. Jason arrived at school an hour early to begin to set out the most amazing collection and he led a fabulous day where the children were fully engaged in using the collection to find out more and more about the period they have been studying.
It was like having a museum in school – but a museum where the children could touch everything!
Christmas Show – Star Warts
Wow! All the children who performed in this year’s Christmas show were simply amazing! After a lot of hard work and many after school rehearsals, children from across the school entertained family and friends this week with 4 performances of Star Warts. We could not have asked any more from the children and they should be very, very proud of themselves.
Rotakids Community Singing
Our school Rotakids group organised a choir to visit the Memory Café in All Saints Church, Cotgrave. The Vale of Belvoir Rotary Club set up the Memory Café in January 2015 in a joint venture between the club and All Saints Church. This community project gives sufferers of Dementia and their carers from Cotgrave, Bingham, Radcliffe and the surrounding villages two hours of fun with free refreshments.
A choir of 24 children sang a selection of Christmas songs, a mixture of old and new. Everyone there enjoyed the children’s lovely singing and there were plenty of songs for all to sing along to! Thank you to the children for giving up their time to practice for this and for parents who helped out with lifts.
Christmas Play Tickets
If you have not received a letter to order tickets for this year’s Christmas Play you can download it here to complete and return to school with payment.
Veolia Orchard Campaign
We have a brand new orchard in our school grounds thanks to energy and waste management company Veolia. Last summer Veolia, in partnership with the community action charity Groundwork launched a campaign to help schools increase their biodiversity and join a national network of mini orchards. We applied to be part of this project and were fortunate enough to be chosen as one of the 100 schools across the country to receive 5 trees – three varieties of apples, a pear tree and a plum tree. These were planted in the nature area by the old oak tree, near our existing plum tree.
Children at Robert Miles Juniors many years in the future will be able to enjoy the fruits from our new orchard so a big thank you to Veolia for their kind donation. Here you can see members of our school Rotakids group helping to plant the first tree, watched on by Councillor Neil Clarke from Nottinghamshire County Council:

Duke’s Barn 2022
It is always a treat to take Year 6 away to the wonderful Dukes Barn and this year was no exception. The children spent 3 days at the centre and took part in some exciting outdoor activities: abseiling, stream walking and canoeing as well as making use of the new indoor climbing wall and problem solving ropes course.
It was a pleasure to take the children away. Many fears were conquered and many new experiences were had. Exactly what a residential visit should offer.
Here are the photos from the trip:
Dictionaries for Life
Year 5 had a treat today when they each received the gift of a dictionary from the Rotary Club of the Vale of Belvoir. The books are part of a project called ‘Dictionaries for Life’ which gives local children a dictionary to take with them when they leave our school. Chris Netherwood from the Rotary Club presented each year 5 child with their own book, which they quickly named! The dictionaries are really useful and of great quality and many thanks must go to the Rotary club for their generosity.
